Elders
The Elder is diligent in the exercise of his or her faith and strives to be sensitive and compassionate in ministry to and with others. The church elects as elders those who reflect these qualities. Status as an elder is not restricted by age; rather, elders are those who provide our congregation with spiritual leadership. Elders also are involved in instruction in the faith, and provide the watchful care of a loving Shepherd.
Spiritual Leadership
You can expect to see Elders assisting the pastor in worship services by preaching, praying, reading, and celebrating the Lord’s Supper. On occasion, Elders will help lead memorial services, baptisms or other special events.
Instruction
Elders will often teach in formal classroom programs. But person-to-person “eldering” more often than not is more of a mentoring relationship, much like the help one receives by talking with a wise and compassionate friend.
Shepherding
An Elder will be a ready listener and a helper in a time of personal trouble, a visitor to the hospital room, and will also serve communion to those recovering at home. The congregation is divided into In-Reach Care Teams for whom shepherding responsibility is shared by an Elder and a Deacon.
